Despite plenty of project oppurtunities in Kuwait's construction sector, particularly in industrial construction and transport and energy infrastructure, the country's business environment is limiting investment and investor interest. Political involvement in awarding of contracts, claims of corruption and numerous project redesigns have been putting off foreign investors from key infrastructure projects in Kuwait, despite government's support towards development projects. In comparison to its GCC neighbours, Kuwait's industry size is small and will exprience more moderate growth rates. Between 2014 and 2018, BMI forecasts the value of the Kuwaiti construction industry will increase on average by 4.2% yo- y, taking it from US$3.5bn in 2014 to US$5bn by 2018.

BMI projects that Indian consumer electronics spending will grow by about 16% in US dollar terms in 2014 to US$43.4bn, fuelled by rising incomes, growing affordability, and the fact that 45% of India's population is under 25. PC market growth is currently being driven by laptops and by tablets, albeit sales of the latter are growing from a very small base. Meanwhile, sales of smartphones - including Apple's iPhone - are finally taking off. Spending on consumer electronics devices is projected to grow at an overall CAGR of 14% through to the end of our five-year forecast to 2018, with the key segments including low-cost mobile handsets, colour TV sets, set-top boxes and notebook computers. Much of the growth during our forecast period will be driven by growing demand from India's underpenetrated rural areas. However, there are concerns a new import tax on handsets priced at above 2,000 rupees could constrain demand in this key product category.

The development of Croatia's consumer electronics market has been stymied by the challenging economic environment in the country, which has seen GDP contract in real terms between 2010-2013. Declining consumption, unemployment, currency depreciation and fiscal austerity have all squeezed demand for devices, countering the positive impact of some technology trends such as adoption of smartphones, tablets and smart-TVs. BMI believes big-ticket items such as TVs and PCs have been hardest hit by the economic challenges faced in Croatia, leaving the handset market as the outperforming subsegment.

BMI maintains its positive outlook for the US freight transport sector. Our view for gradual strengthening in the US economy through end 2014 continues to play out, driven by a tightening labour market and sustained growth in the cyclical components of the economy, notably the residential housing sector and business investment in equipment. Data have been particularly strong in recent months, and we acknowledge that risks are weighted to the upside. On the back of this BMI maintains its cautiously positive outlook on the US freight sector.

BMI's Kuwait Defence & Security Report for Q114 examines the country's strategic position in the Middle East and globally. Kuwait continues to have a close defence relationship with the US and has reportedly increased the number of service personnel receiving training in foreign academies. In the last quarter, Kuwait has had yet another election, leading to the appointment of a new defence minister. Despite this - and ongoing sectarian tensions linked to the conflict in Syria - overall stability is such that continued defence links with the US and Western arms contractors will be maintained.

We forecast strengthening Mexican macroeconomic fundamentals from 2014 through 2018 will lead to solid production and consumption growth of steel. We expect expansion of the automotive, manufacturing, construction, and oil and gas sectors, all of which rely on steel as an input, through our forecast period as the Mexican economy continues to recover from recent economic weakness. Still, domestic producers are likely to face pressure from foreign imports, given global steel market overcapacity, though recent import rule changes should curtail the impact of cheaper foreign steel.

Spain's electricity market is struggling in the face of an unclear regulatory environment and a sluggish economy. Keen to cut costs, the government wants to reduce renewable energy subsidies, but it risks the wrath of providers who invested in the market expecting high returns. In February UAE renewable energy developer Masdar, owning a 40% stake in Torresol Energy, was the first operator to file an official legal case against Spain At the other end of the scale, major utilities have long been demanding increases in electricity prices to plug the gap between the cost of generation and the prices paid by end-users, but proposals for an 11% increase in January 2014 were rejected by the country's newly created regulator, capping prices increases at 2.3%. In the face of this confusion, some players may simply choose to invest elsewhere. E.ON is one example of this, with press reports from late 2013 suggesting the German utility is keen to sell its assets in Spain.
