An estimated 6.8 million adults in the United States suffer from General Anxiety Disorder (GAD), with women receiving a diagnosis twice as often as men. Symptoms of GAD include excessive worry and irrational fear. A person must display these symptoms for a minimum of 6 months in order to receive a clinical diagnosis. Even though General Anxiety Disorder is very common, many Americans don’t know how to recognize symptoms of the disorder. Recently published data suggests that people seeking counselling for common mental health problems are more likely to recover if they pay to go privately. Statistics published by The British CBT & Counselling Service show an 85% recovery rate amongst their patients compared to an average recovery rate of less than 50% amongst patients receiving similar treatment in the NHS for conditions such as Depression, Anxiety, Eating Disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Grief and Relationship Problems. The reason for this significant difference in success rates is likely to be funding which is impacting once again on the NHS’s ability to provide what is the nation needs.

Evidence-based medicine (EBM) has been the catchcry of many physicians, researchers and others in the medical community since the dawn of this most recent millennium. As more and more medical professionals profess themselves to be supporters of what sounds, in theory, to be such a beneficial tack for the healthcare system to take, it’s interesting to note that there has been insufficient scrutiny as to the methods of EBM itself.

In the entire history of the world, being a man has never been more complicated. The reality of masculinity in modern life is fraught and many guys don’t have a space where they can articulate their challenges, hopes and fears. Feminism gave women a movement to attach to and a plan with which to move forward, but for many the distinct lack of a defined male role in society – or the constantly changing goalposts on what it is to be male – have meant that confusion over certainty has more often than not been the way many men have felt.
