Frequently in engineering and manufacturing environments, there are an uncontrollable number of projects, yet customers demand immediate completion. Teams of hardworking professionals get so far behind that even the simplest of tasks cannot be completed. Lacking the necessary inputs, work is constantly starting and stopping; communications snafus create more delays, causing project lead times to grow exponentially.
Pinnacle Strategies issued a new white paper in which the company examines a breakthrough approach to improving production called Rapid Analysis Bottleneck Improvement Team (RABIT). The approach may increase manufacturing productivity by at least 20% in two months without adding more workers or machines. Download the new whitepaper to discover how an underperforming shop floor or production team can increase productivity.

Quality Digest recently looked at Lean and Theory of Constraints. In the article, http://www.qualitydigest.com/inside/quality-insider-article/bringing-lean-constraint.html#, manufacturing journalist, TR Cutler reviewed the current status of both approaches. ToC emphasizes the underlying principle and importance of identifying and eliminating bottlenecks (or constraints) in the manufacturing process. This focus increases productivity and serves as a tool for measuring and controlling the flow of materials. The challenge is figuring out how to actually identify these constraints while never compromising quality. The fundamental approach to lean manufacturing is to strive for true one-piece flow by reducing waste and matching flow to customer demand. Balanced flow buffers excess inventory between each point in the process, making it immediately apparent which process is underperforming. This knowledge allows quality assurance and operations managers to dispatch resources to address the situation, known as “go and see.”

World demand for home medical equipment is projected to increase 7.0 percent annually to $28 billion in 2016. The United States will remain the largest market globally based on its extensive network of home health care providers, high health care spending intensity, widespread insurance coverage, and shifting patient care strategies toward home settings. The large developing countries of Brazil, China, India, and Russia will be among the fastest growing worldwide markets for home medical equipment as increasing economic prosperity boosts the level of third-party and direct consumer payments applied to health care. In these countries, home health care activity will expand rapidly due to cost saving advantages and ongoing shortages in professional medical providers. These and other trends, including market share and product segmentation, are presented in World Home Medical Equipment, a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industry market research firm.

Pit Crews cut final assembly time in half at FMC Technologies. Synchronized pit crews of today, represent optimum speed, precise timing, and meticulous attention to detail. According to Woeppel, those same benefits can be driven right onto the factory floor, giving the manufacturer a competitive workflow advantage that’s hard to beat. Pinnacle Strategies harnessed a pit crew analogy to demonstrate and facilitate successful Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM). The innovative idea proved itself by turning in an outstanding performance in a recent application at FMC Technologies, an engineer-to-order manufacturer of complex capital equipment in Houston.
