This year, the first week of August marked the 19th annual Responsible Gaming Education Week, an initiative by the American Gaming Association to showcase the AGA's dedication to responsible gaming. Gambling disorders currently affect as many as 6 million Americans, and the AGA asserts that the gaming industry bears a duty to promote environments in which gamblers can play in safe, legal and informative environments that encourage responsible behavior. The Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (CCGNJ), a non-profit organization that offers help and resources for those struggling with a gambling addiction, commends the AGA's initiative and commemorated Responsible Gaming Education Week this year.

With the aim of helping problem gamblers, their loved ones and mental health professionals better understand the public health implications of widespread problem gambling, the Council has shared information on the correlation between problem gambling, mental health and physical health.

Disordered gambling and its dizzying cycle of losses, wins, emotional highs and financial devastations do not have isolated effects. The loved ones and family members of affected gamblers are also often hit hard by this addiction, says the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (CCGNJ), which runs a gambling help hotline, 1-800-GAMBLER. This impact includes problems with money, emotional problems, domestic violence and other physical and mental health problems. The CCGNJ recently shared information on how families and children are affected by problem gambling, as well as the warning signs of living with a problem gambler.

For years, it has been observed that a correlation exists between domestic violence and disordered gambling. The Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (CCGNJ), a non-profit organization that offers support, treatment and hope to problem gamblers and their loved ones, including access to Gamblers Anonymous meetings in NJ, recently conducted a survey intended to discover more about the coincidence of these two issues. Sources tell A Just Cause that on Friday July 15, 2016 that Acting Warden Garrido accompanied by Associate Warden Johns, a captain, lieutenant, Camp Administrator Segovia and two correctional officers allegedly flooded the small visiting room at the Federal Prison Camp in Florence, CO and intimidated visiting families into not speaking to anyone except the inmate they were visiting. "The prison camp visiting room is usually overseen by a single officer," say Lamont Banks, Executive Director of A Just Cause. "The presence of virtually the entire senior management team seemed to be an attempt to strike fear into the hearts of families and use an iron-hand approach to enforce a misguided, frivolous rule called cross-visiting that was created by Warden Stancil and sanctioned by BOP Director Thomas Kane," adds Banks.
