Nearly $3 Million in annual revenue is a lot of cheesecakes. Desserts of Distinction of Portland, Oregon, now 28 years in business, “bakes” to order from any of its 19 fillings and 7 crusts in a choice of portion sizes which are shipped in a range of packaging choices to a considerable number of customers, both large and small. The company makes mostly short production runs, between 100 and 150 batches per day. As you would expect, the owners are both master bakers and resourceful business people. They raced through the $2 Million revenue mark with no more in business management tools than Excel spreadsheets for recipes, tracking sales and inventory, and an Access database for managing batches. Now they rely entirely upon BatchMaster Enterprise and are set up to do Lot Tracking at virtually any level of granularity.

One of the common mistakes that small companies make is selecting an ERP system that is not focus on their industry. According to Albert Barriga, vice-president of operations, “All the systems Superior Quality Food evaluated were similar in respect that they followed Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Batchmaster (the ERP system selected) was more focused on the food industry. This helps us, for example, whenever we make a batch, because there will always be a partial batch of material left over at the end of the process. We wanted a system that would record those partial batches, so when we made the same product again, the first ingredient it would call for would be the partial batch (and plan the raw material for the rest).”

For manufacturers, BI (business intelligence) should be about quantifying business assumptions that were previously too costly and time-consuming to challenge. For example, they are using it to identify hot sellers, to cut costs, and to discover new business opportunities. ACF Office Seating, for example, manufactures, unsurprisingly, office seating. The company’s IT manager, Paul Griffiths, was a long-time user of Visibility ERP. The most significant addition to it was the SQL Server 2000 data mart and analysis services reporting cube. We had this linked to our sales tables some 18 months ago and since then it has become the most used reporting tool in the company. The sales team uses the cube analysis daily to track sales and invoicing by month, area, product and range. It has become an indispensable tool for sales analysis and forecasting. It’s easy to use and very versatile. While BI programs get at the data using different techniques, OLAP (online analytical processing) cubes that slice and dice data remain central to the methodology.
